Development of Bonded Joint Technology for a Rigidizable-Inflatable Deployable Truss

Smeltzer, Stanley S., III; [2006]; 11 pp.; In English; SPIE Defense and Security Symposium 2006, 17-21 Apr. 2006, Orlando,FL, USA; Original contains color and black and white illustrationsContract(s)/Grant(s): 23-612-20-81-10; No Copyright; Avail.: CASI: A03, Hardcopy

Microwave and Synthetic Aperture Radar antenna systems have been developed as instrument systems using trussstructures as their primary support and deployment mechanism for over a decade. NASA Langley Research Center has beeninvestigating fabrication, modular assembly, and deployment methods of lightweight rigidizable/inflatable linear trussstructures during that time for large spacecraft systems. The primary goal of the research at Langley Research Center is toadvance these existing state-of-the-art joining and deployment concepts to achieve prototype system performance in a relevantspace environment. During 2005, the development, fabrication, and testing of a 6.7 meter multi-bay, deployable linear trusswas conducted at Langley Research Center to demonstrate functional and precision metrics of a rigidizable/inflatable trussstructure. The present paper is intended to summarize aspects of bonded joint technology developed for the 6.7 meterdeployable linear truss structure while providing a brief overview of the entire truss fabrication, assembly, and deploymentmethodology. A description of the basic joint design, surface preparation investigations, and experimental joint testing ofcomponent joint test articles will be described. Specifically, the performance of two room temperature adhesives wereinvestigated to obtain qualitative data related to tube folding testing and quantitative data related to tensile shear strengthtesting. It was determined from the testing that a polyurethane-based adhesive best met the rigidizable/inflatable truss projectrequirements.Author

Telecommunications: Weaknesses in Procedures and Performance Management Hinder Junk Fax Enforcement

Apr. 2006; 58 pp.; In EnglishReport No.(s): PB2006-109701; GAO-06-425; No Copyright; Avail.: CASI: A04, Hardcopy

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 prohibited invasive telemarketing practices, including the faxing ofunsolicited advertisements, known as ‘junk faxes,’ to individual consumers and businesses. Junk faxes create costs forconsumers (paper and toner) and disrupt their fax operations. The Junk Fax Prevention Act of 2005 clarified an establishedbusiness relationship exemption, specified opt-out procedures for consumers, and requires the Federal CommunicationsCommission (FCC)-the federal agency responsible for junk fax enforcement-to report annually to Congress on junk faxcomplaints and enforcement. The law also required GAO to report to Congress on FCC’s enforcement of the junk fax laws. This report addresses (1) FCC’s junk fax procedures and outcomes, (2) the strengths and weaknesses of FCC’s procedures, and (3) FCC’s junk fax management challenges.NTIS

Superfund Community Involvement Handbook

Apr. 2002; 110 pp.; In English Report No.(s): PB2006-109224; EPA/540/K-01/003; No Copyright; Avail.: CASI: A06, Hardcopy

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) applies the term community involvement to its commitment to early and meaningful community participation during Superfund cleanup. The foundation of Superfund’s community involvement program is the belief that members of the public affected by a Superfund site have a right to know what the Agency is doing in their community and to have a say in the decision-making process. This handbook presents legal and policy requirements for Superfund community involvement and additional suggestions for involving the community in the Superfund process. 18 These suggestions are based on experience and are intended to enact EPA’s commitment to providing the public with every opportunity to become meaningfully involved in the Superfund process.
