Experimental Astrophysics on the Omega Laser. (Final Report)
Drake, R. P.; Remington, B.; Arnett, D.; Rosner, R.; Robey, H.; January 2005; 24 pp.; In English Report No.(s): DE2005-842592; No Copyright; Avail.: Department of Energy Information Bridge
This report summarized results obtained in work supported by this research grant. In hydrodynamic instability experiments related to supernovae, we showed that initial conditions have a controlling effect on material interpenetration, and demonstrated new diagnostic techniques that will provide improved data. In radiative shock experiments, we demonstrated the ability to produce and detect radiative shocks that have collapsed spatially in consequence of radiative cooling. NTIS

New IAB Iron Meteorite from China
Ponganis, K. V.; Lavielle, B.; Spettel, B.; Buchwald, V. F.; Nishiizumi, K.; Mar. 30, 2001; 8 pp.; In English Report No.(s): DE2005-15013415; UCRL-ID-145419; No Copyright; Avail.: Department of Energy Information Bridge
Dr. W. Wei, at UCSD, provided our laboratory with chips from a suspected iron meteorite. The mass (\g10 kg) was found approximately 8 northwest of Zhongshan in Guangxi province by a farmer in his fields. This mass has now been identified as an IAB iron meteorite (provisional name Zhongshan no. 1) based on its composition, N signature, and petrographic analysis. A second chip from a much larger mass (Zhongshan no. 2), still in the ground, was recently made available and work is in progress on it, but not reported. Elemental Composition: A 65 mg sample of Zhongshan no. 1 was analyzed by INAA at the Max Planck Institute in Mainz. The concentration of diagnostic elements for iron meteorites, such as Ni, Ga, Ge, and platinum group metals, are consistent with the IAB/IIICD group. NTIS

Highest Redshift Radio Galaxies
van Breugel, W.; Mar. 14, 2000; 18 pp.; In English Report No.(s): DE2005-15013406; UCRL-JC-137935; No Copyright; Avail.: Department of Energy Information Bridge
At low redshifts powerful radio sources are uniquely associated with massive galaxies, and are thoughts to be powered by supermassive black holes. Modern 8m - 10m telescopes may be used to find their likely progenitors at very high redshifts to study their formation and evolution. NTIS
