CMC Electronics signed a memorandum of agreement with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the installation and certification of Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) avionics for the FAA Bombardier Global 5000 aircraft.

CMC Electronics contracted with Honeywell International and Bombardier Aerospace for this program.

CMC, Honeywell and Bombardier are engaged in the development of WAAS avionics for the FAA Bombardier Global 5000 aircraft (BD700-1A11) N47, S/N 9160 and expect to complete the development in 2008.

The certification will be to the latest RTCA/DO-229D MOPS, FAA TSO C-145b Beta-3 and FAA TSO C-146 Delta-4.

CMC will produce the TSO'd WAAS receiver, Honeywell will integrate and update the flight deck for the WAAS enhancements and Bombardier will integrate the entire avionics and produce the factory Service Bulletin.

CMC, Honeywell and Bombardier plan to offer the WAAS avionics to their customers. These avionics will provide the FAA with the capability to demonstrate, flight test and prove WAAS capability for all phases of flight, from take-off to touch-down, using their Bombardier Global 5000 aircraft. This aircraft is based at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, N.J.

The WAAS was developed by the FAA to support a major change in air operations - the transition from navigation using fixed land-based navigation aids to navigation using the space-based global positioning system (GPS).

WAAS augments GPS to provide an accurate navigation solution that supports all flight operations from en route through global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and WAAS LPV CAT-I equivalent approach. Commissioned in July 2003, WAAS is a relatively new air navigation system.

WAAS is expected to provide substantial benefits to the FAA and WAAS system users through:

According to CMC, for WAAS benefits to be realized broad WAAS equipage throughout the user community - from small general aviation (GA) aircraft through to large commercial air transport aircraft - must be achieved.
