Eurocontrol announced Air France, Air Mediterranee, Air One, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Volkswagen joined the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) Pioneer Airlines project.
The objective of the project, launched in 2006 by the Eurocontrol Cascade Programme, is to assist airlines in obtaining airworthiness approval for their existing ADS-B equipment, which will enable them to receive an ADS-B-based air traffic control service.
ADS-B relies on aircraft broadcasting their identity, position ( global navigation satellite system-based, or GNSS- based) and velocity. The transmitted aircraft signal is captured by receivers on the ground ("ADS-B out") or in the aircraft ("ADS-B in").
The six operators join 11 others who became part of the project in 2006. In total, more than 400 aircraft are now involved, generating more than 500,000 ADS-B certified flights per year in European airspace, according to Eurocontrol.
The aircraft will provide air navigation service providers with certified surveillance data that will enable them to bring their ADS-B ground stations to a state of operational readiness by late 2008 or early 2009.
The project includes a range of Airbus, ATR, Boeing and Dassault aircraft types and was designed to help a large part of the industry prepare for early use of ADS-B in Europe, Australia and Canada. In the meantime Eurocontrol, Airservices Australia, U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Nav Canada are working together to define the standard to be used from 2015 onwards.
The Eurocontrol Cascade program:
- Coordinates the implementation of initial ADS-B applications in Europe.
- Performs trials.
- Clarifies operational scenarios.
- Drives the production of global standards.
- Produces a safety case and a business case, paving the way for operational approval.
In European airspace, implementation of "ADS-B out" is expected to start in 2008. Cascade is being considered as one of the potential Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) short-term projects.
More information on Cascade is available on the Eurocontrol web site at http://www.eurocontrol.int/cascade.
