The U.S. Air Force shipped the payload equipment module of the Flight 3 Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite to Northrop Grumman Space Technology.
The payload equipment module consists of structural panels that provide housing for all spacecraft bus and payload systems as well as thermal control.
The Northrop Grumman Space Technology team will begin integrating payload components such as antennas and digital signal processors, which are the components and subsystems directly related to the mission of the satellite.
Once testing is complete, the payload module will be shipped back to Lockheed Martin Space Systems Center for final integration with the core propulsion system module.
The AEHF System is a joint service satellite communications system that is designed to provide global survivable, protected and assured communications, said the Air Force.
The system is designed to allow the National Security Council and Unified Combatant Commanders to control their tactical and strategic forces, said the Air Force.
