IATA, Naverus Team for Performance-based Navigation
April 27, 2006
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forged a partnership with Naverus Inc. to accelerate the deployment of performance-based navigation solutions worldwide.
Naverus and IATA agree that performance-based navigation is a critical part of the "roadmap" for aviation and that it needs to be advanced worldwide. Naverus will lend its expertise to specific projects, which have been identified on several continents, in an effort to provide benefits in safety and efficiency for airlines.
The working relationship will facilitate economic and safety gains for airlines internationally, according to Naverus CEO Dan Gerrity. In 2005 airlines spent approximately $92B based on an average $57 per barrel for oil. While Naverus expects that in five years everyone will be flying required navigation performance (RNP) procedures, the question remains as to how much fuel will be burned before operational approval.
According to IATA, the relationship with Naverus will help accelerate the industry's deployment of RNP and area navigation (RNAV) as part of IATA's "One sky... global ATM" strategy.
