The
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) was chosen by
NASA to serve as the secretariat support organization for the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) - a coalition of international space agencies and industrial associates that develops data and information systems standards for space travel.
The CCSDS works to promote interoperability among cooperating space agencies and to reduce various agencies' costs for performing common data functions. As the secretariat organization, AIAA will provide management support of CCSDS standards activities, web site development and promotional services. The AIAA contract will be managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA's center for technical and data standards.
"Bringing CCSDS under the AIAA standards program umbrella provides a unique opportunity for cooperation among the space community to develop and harmonize standards that will play an important role in future civil, defense and commercial space ventures," said Amr ElSawy, AIAA vice president for standards. "We believe AIAA can help advance the goals of CCSDS and better serve this important community."
AIAA also serves as the secretariat to the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) Subcommittee (SC) 14 of Technical Committee (TC) 20, Aircraft and Space Vehicles. With more than 80 projects underway in the field of space systems and operations, SC14 develops standards covering the design, production, maintenance, operation and disposal of manned and unmanned space vehicles.
"By leveraging AIAA's considerable experience in standardization management, CCSDS will enhance its consensus processes while also utilizing the institute's broad reach to increase CCSDS visibility within the aerospace community," said John Kelley, chairman of the CCSDS management council and head of the NASA Data Standards Program.
