FAA to Use Rockwell Collins Technology

November 21, 2005

Rockwell Collins landed a contract with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deliver its Wide Area Augmentation System functionality with localizer performance with vertical guidance (WAAS LPV) for use in the FAA's flight inspection aircraft.

In conjunction with the FAA, Rockwell Collins will develop a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to add WAAS LPV functionality to the FAA's Aviation Systems Standards (AVN) fleet of Bombardier Challenger 604 flight inspection aircraft. The STC is scheduled for completion within the next 24 months.

The technology was designed to enable pilots to perform precision approaches in low visibility conditions. WAAS LPV has the functionality needed to help meet future Required Navigational Performance (RNP) requirements, the company said.

WAAS provides service for all classes of aircraft, Rockwell Collins said.
