Boeing Completes Aircraft Interference Cancellation Tests
December 2, 2005
Boeing Co. finished initial laboratory verification testing of the Interference Cancellation (INCANS) system on the EA-18G tactical aircraft. INCANS was designed to enable the EA-18G, for the first time, to conduct voice communications over ultra-high radio frequencies with allies, while simultaneously jamming enemy communications, Boeing said.
For system verification purposes, INCANS engineering development hardware was installed in an F/A-18F.
The aircraft was then suspended in an anechoic chamber, while representatives from the U.S. Navy, Boeing and EDO (which built the engineering development model) verified proper radio frequency cancellation.
The demonstration included voice quality checks with active ALQ-99 jamming from a centerline pod, Boeing said.
The company demonstrated the system's capabilities during aircraft ground testing in Maryland. Boeing noted that some system fine-tuning is still necessary.
Next, EDO will test and refine the system at its Thousand Oaks, Calif. facility. As part of its efforts, EDO will produce eight system development and demonstration models.
