Publication Date:
Nov 1, 2000
Scope:
Purpose.
This document is a standard for industry and government to
establish facilities that minimize the risk to operations as
much as practical. It is intended for use as a baseline document.
Other facilities requirements may be contractually imposed, or with
the approval of all parties, requirements from this National
Aerospace Standard may be waived.
This standard consolidates and implements airfield criteria,
aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) services, and aircraft
hangar fire protection requirements, to establish a minimum level
of risk for aircraft and personnel. These risk reductions have been
extracted from Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR)
{NOTE: Not to be confused with Federal Acquisition
Regulations (FAR)}, National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) codes and standards, International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidance, and DOD and Service
guidance.
Compatibility With Existing Regulations. Minimum facilities
requirements for operations prescribed in this NAS that differ from
existing statutory or regulatory requirements shall be subject to
the agreement of all parties involved.
Proposals Not Meeting Standard. When the existing facilities do
not meet the prescriptive portions of this document, proposals

permitted to be introduced defining alternate means of providing
