The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) actively participates in the development of public policy, the advancement of the aerospace market, the development and maintenance of national and international standards, and development of education programs and initiatives.

AIAA formed in 1963 when the American Rocket Society and Institute of Aerospace Science merged. AIAA standards for international use are developed in conjunction with ISO. American national standards activities are performed by five Committees on Standards. The general areas each committee focuses on are Aerospace Sciences; Information and Logistics; Propulsion; Space Systems; and Structures, Design, and Test. AIAA regularly provides expert witnesses to testify before Congressional committees and advises the Executive Office on aerospace matters.

AIAA standards represent a consensus among government, industry, and academia. Scientists, engineers, industry professionals, educators, and students find AIAA standards useful in the areas of design, development, testing, construction, and operation of air and space vehicles.
